I was surprised and delighted to discover this wonderful example of traditional Ukrainian embroidery printed on a simple plastic shopping bag a friend of mine from Kiev sent me! Its humble origin  illustrates how deeply the art of embroidery permeates Ukrainian daily life. This pattern offers the traditional red and black colorway along with a blue and black variation for a fresh take on this beautiful design.

This Library Edition pattern shows the full size of the original pattern which is designed to make a large, rectangule, suitable for either a rectangular table runner or cushion cover. It can be easily adapted to working smaller or larger embroideries by working less repeats of the design.

Finished size: 11x15.5” (actual area of embroidery 9 x 13-1/2”)

Stitch count: 130 x 203

Total stitches:12154

This is also available as a paper pattern or a Kit. The kit version includes the pattern, Mikini 30 ct 100% cotton ground cloth, DMC Floss, and a John James size 24 tapestry needle. It is available in either the red/black or blue/black colorway.

A note about Library Edition patterns:

Many of the original embroideries I use as a starting point for my designs are too large for the smaller kits and patterns I typically offer due to the time involved in stitching a sample to photograph for the cover page of the pattern. However, these traditional designs from museums or prikas (bridal chest embroidery collections) are such stunning pieces of textile art that I thought the modern stitcher would enjoy the opportunity to work these historic pieces. These are beautiful, heirloom-worthy projects for the experienced stitcher and this pattern presumes an intermediate level of stitching knowledge.
