This stunning design originates in the highly ornamented hand-painted borders that are found in illuminated manuscripts and frescoes from the Byzantine era. It features a complex primary border of intertwining leaves surrounding stylized rondels and is then finished with an interlocking outer border and a triangular inner border. The design is completed with lovely flourishes along the outer perimeter in true Byzantine style.
