This kit comes with Appleton's Crewel Wool, a single strand 100% wool from the UK. Crewel wool works up with more texture than cotton floss and is excellent for cushion cover designs such as this.

I was surprised and delighted to discover this wonderful example of traditional Ukrainian embroidery printed on a simple plastic shopping bag a friend of mine from Kiev sent me! Its humble origin  illustrates how deeply the art of embroidery permeates Ukrainian daily life. The traditional red and black color palette is shown worked in Appleton’s crewel wools for a cozy cushion, but you can also work it in DMC.

Finished size (exclusive of finishing): 9-1/2 x 14-5/8”

My high quality kits come with everything you need to make the embroidery in the photos--our Mikini 26ct in white, Appleton's crewel wool (or DMC floss*), full color SOC (symbol-on-chart) pattern, along with a John James size 24 tapestry needle. The raw edges of the fabric are serged for your convenience, so you can start stitching as soon as you open the kit!

*This kit has two floss options: Appleton's Crewel Wools or DMC 6-strand 100% cotton floss. The DMC flosses are the closest color match to the Appleton's, but please keep in mind they are not an "exact" match because wool and cotton take dyes differently.

The coordinating Petite Foulard cushion cover backing kit can be found on the Fabric & Notions page.
