How do you all go about changing out colors? I have a strong aversion to blue and yellow greens, but love most other greens. Do o just pick colors I like, or is there a way to systematically swap out colors?
It's not easy being green! I have a gag reaction to certain greens, so I get it. Green is the color I seem to switch out most frequently, followed closely by certain shades of pink. When I'm going to change out colors, I do the "floss toss" where I literally toss my flosses on the ground cloth I'm going to use to see how I like them together. I also use a "doodle cloth" to stitch a bit of a design in different colors, to see what works. When it comes to color saturation, you could try a "ruby beholder" which is just a piece of red plexiglass that you can find in lots of quilt shops. It filters out the color and helps you to focus on color value/saturation so your combination doesn't turn out muddy.
Another spiffy trick I've used is to look through the Avlea website to see color combinations in the kits I find appealing and then "borrow" the color choices from those. If you scroll through the pics, you can usually find one where the color numbers are listed and *poof* there you go!
There's no real system in swapping out colors, it just has to do with what colors you like. I would try to match the saturation of colors if you want it to look like the designs in the photos. For example, swap out 924 grey green very dk for a dark forest green shade or swap out 926 grey green med for a lighter green shade. When I design, part of the process is not only the particular color, but the saturation of any given color in relation to all the other colors (dark to light, light to dark) so as long as you keep those similar, you should easily be able to swap out greens that you like better. Herrschners carries all the DMC and it's a great place to see all of the colors without having to order a DMC swatch card.
