I'm new to stitching over 2 threads & can't seem to wrap my head around how I'd calculate the nbr of thread or holes I need to skip when moving around the groundcloth (either up or across). Is there a formula?
What an inspiration that you are continuing to learn new things!! It is challenging to “see” the stitches. I am not a prolific stitcher; my projects that have been just one color have been the most relaxing to stitch and learn how to count. I do have to count and recount, and take out! Again, thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you for that. Ever since I retired at age 62, I've done one craft after another. I do not have any staying power, & I never get especially good at anything, but I love the learning process.
Well, as you can see, there's a lot of helpful folks here at The Courtyard! I was on vaca this past week with no cell service and only just saw your post. I totally agree with Debera--you need to give yourself a bit of time for your brain to learn to "see" the threads, but this is SO amazing for your brain. You're literally re-wiring your brain while you learn to do this, so have patience. You've got this!
We all struggle with that! For every blank area, skip over two threads. When I have a large area to count, it's sometimes helpful to use a "counting pin" which is just any old pin you have to mark your cloth. I can't tell you how many times I've gotten to a place and The Man starts talking to me about something that distracts me and I lose my place. When using a counting pin, at least I don't have to go back to the beginning. I can place one every ten stitches (20 threads) or so. Some will also stitch by color before moving to the next color, but I find that too confusing for counting purposes, so I will often have several needles going at once with different colors of floss in them so I don't have to count as much.
Thanks for your help. I will use a counting pin. I also took a few minutes to mark out stitches on paper until I finally understood why I would skip 2 threads.
Hi, I appreciate the suggestion of a counting pin. I was just going to post a new question on best way to count along a long row and saw your suggestion. Will give this a try as it beats re-counting over and over as I have done. :)
