What does everyone think of floss organizers? I'm working on some new needle minder designs (wait til you see them!) and I was thinking of offering floss organizers (also known as 'thread drops' or 'floss drops') with the same motifs. I can have them printed on paper or plastic, but I'm leaning towards heavy cardstock since it's more eco-friendly. As for shape, I'm considering an oval shape so they wouldn't snag on anything in a workbag. I'd love to hear what you think--great idea, maybe not, I'd love them, would never use them, etc! Bring on the feedback!
Personally, I've been organizing my floss on a wooden ring, but I do find that the floss snags sometime on the wood and I've been considering using something like thread organizers.
That’s fabulous! I just might do that! Thanks for sharing!!
I think you will like them! And I hope to accomplish the same thing.
Ooo I like that idea too! The photo organizers that I get from Hobby Lobby have a base that I stuck on the inside of my end table, I can easily pull the one I want out. Ordered 2 more for the same space... and maybe I can separate by color easier than what I have now!
I have tried the bobbins... now I’m leaving them as they come. I have been using photo organizers....
Hi. I don’t use them . I keep each floss skein in a floss away bag for protection. But I know a ton of stitchers who do use them and it’s a popular way to store floss while working a project.
I like where you’re going with this. The flat plastic and cardboard bobbins crease the floss. For a budget friendly solution, I find that twisting it and looping it through a hole in the the card stock keeps the floss rather tame (no long tails) and you don’t get those pesky creases. Another hole at the top makes it easy to pop on the ring of your choice. Yay! It’s pretty simple to precut and twist the floss. One request : please use stock that can be written on, so that color numbers can be noted. The card stock that DMC uses simply can’t be written on and their number stickers fall off. Same for their plastic bobbins.
Well, we're considering using the same weight of card stock to make the floss organizers inexpensive and recyclable, so you're right there with us! Us, being my amazing graphic designer, Kristen, who helps me bring all of Avlea to life--she's looking into various shapes and researching paper weights right now :)
I just had a thought - maybe you can use the “thank you” card that you attach the needle to by punching holes vertically along the side 🤷🏻♀️ idk maybe it’s silly but it could work
Boy, I was gone this weekend, and so much has been going on here! What a huge decision to not attend the Market Krista! It is really encouraging to see your family matching their actions with their beliefs. It seems easy to share our opinions, but the true test is when the rubber meets the road. Bravo! I am using a wooden macrame ring for my floss, and I really like it. I love the way floss looks on the ring. My ring is smooth, so even two strands do well on it. I have tried several other methods, and this is my fave. If I need to go compact, I loosely wrap the hanging floss over the ring, and have not had issues. If you design groovy ones, I am sure I will try them out though : )
low budget "solution" but any time I have the chance to use a beautiful tool, it makes it more fun to stitch
Yes, I like to store all of my floss on a wooden ring--simple yet efficient. I've ordered some basic floss organizers and a 2-inch ring so I can start experimenting with how I might like that system. Stay tuned!
I use plastic bobbins for storing all of my DMC flosses and I use metal rings to store my overdyed flosses and I leave them on the cards. It's funny, I was just thinking about that this week, as I'm trying to tackle a couple of big floss hanks. I just cut them to length and knotted them and am keeping them in the same bag as the chart. I also have some of the Sajou floss winders, but I mostly just keep them because they're so pretty. They're on a ring as well. I think my ideal floss storage consists of a ring that I can load up with floss drops/floss winders with a hole at the top. Since your palette is nicely consistent, I could store all of my Avlea flosses on the same ring and float from project to project so long as I keep the numbers straight. Hope that makes sense.
Well, by the time we shipped those here, they'd get really expensive so that's why I was looking for something inexpensive yet beautiful. All of this feedback is really helpful!
Do you think a polished wooden ring would snag? Something like this could be nice, either with a small burned-in "branding" of the logo, or maybe a cloth or leather logo tag. The seller might be able to work with you for a more optimal size/smoothness. (Plus, he's in Greece!) etsy.com/listing/170891250/5-wood-rings-2-12-inch-walnut-wooden
I had no idea what to do with my floss at first! I kept it all coiled up in the paper bag you send your kits in :) Now I've been using a wooden ring, which does work pretty well but I agree it can sometimes snag. I'd be intrigued by the floss organizers and would consider going for them.
I use plastic bobbins to store and organize my floss. They come in cardboard too. Those could be cool with the designs!
