I am replicating this graphic on 20-count black Aida in a repeating pattern, creating a border. I "sketched" the pattern out in a single line of backstitch, to get my spacing right. I know I will not get the same effect with thread as with paint, but what stitch/technique would you folks use to create the chunky-funky, kinetic look? Second image is my work in progress, have not started the inside bars. Thanks in advance!

This is a fabulous project--love the intensity of this color palette! So, here's the challenging thing about translating something like this to counted thread--you've got curving lines in the original, which are going to be difficult to recreate in the "grid" of the counted thread fabric. It's not necessarily a problem, it's just that your stitched version is going to have a more "orderly" effect than the original. If you want more flexibility to get some of the feel of those curved lines of the original, I'd suggest trying some needle darning stitches--these are stitches that go over 1 thread (not 2) and have a bit more flexibility. To be honest, I'm still learning them (it's a technique I'm going to be focusing on in my upcoming trip to Greece), so I can't really point you in the right direction, but maybe check YouTube for a tutorial.
One other option: you could make your design larger, which would give you the ability to take those vertical lines of color and do something like this with the stitches:

I hope that makes sense!
That is BEAUTIFUL! Sorry, no advice about the stitches, but WOW! It will be stunning no matter what you decide. ❤
